Women in Gordil, Central African Republic (CAR), carry food and water back home as evening descends. Photo: OCHA/Gemma Cortes 28 November 2016 – With nearly half the population in the Central African Republic (CAR) in need of humanitarian assistance, some $400 million is required over the coming year to shore up relief efforts that will be critical “to save the lives of people who are among the poorest and most forgotten on this planet,” a senior United Nations official said today. Speaking to UN Member States in Geneva, the Minister for Social Welfare and Reconciliation, Virginie Baikoua, and the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for CAR, Fabrizio Hochschild, said the funds are desperately needed despite the progress made over the past three years. Why we are placing a ban on imported rice- Ebonyi State

Image
bags of rice The Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr Dave Umahi, told a delegation of military officers from the Command and Staff College, Jaji on a courtesy call on him, that he would lead a task force of senior government officials to enforce the ban on foreign rice in markets throughout his state. Bags of rice Bags of rice He justified this intention by pointing out that most brands of rice brought into the state were not parboiled, which means they would “become poisonous” after six months. Every rice dealer would have to present a certification of the quality of the rice they stock or face the wrath of the task force. On the face of it, this measure is commendable for several reasons. CBN’s move was aimed at encouraging Nigerian rice farmers to
