A London court has registered a judgement which ordered the federal government to pay N99 billion damages over the bombardment of the Gbaramatu communities in Delta state, Naij reports. The Federal High Court, Asaba, Delta State, had earlier ordered the federal government to pay the communities N99.9 billion damages for gross violation of their rights. The attack supposedly carried out by the joint military task force coordinated by Sarkin Yakin Bello, a retired major general took place in Warri South West Local Government of Delta State in May 2009. The troop allegedly killed, maimed residents and also destroyed properties worth billions of naira. As requested by the communities, Justice Timothy Holroyde of the Queen’s Bench Division of the Royal High Court of Justice England and Wales, on January 18, acceded to the plea. The Registrar Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) says eateries and recreational centres are vulnerable to Lassa virus, if their environment for cooking are not properly sanitised. Abonyi made this known on Thursday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He said that the role of the council as a regulator and the environmental health practitioners were enormous in tackling diseases, specifically in this case of Lassa fever outbreak. `` Lassa fever is a disease which is preventable through adequate sanitation, the major function of environmental health officer is sanitation. ``Environmental health generally encourage quick action to nib spread of disease in the bud, just like the issue of Ebola, and after the control, the robust preventive activities will make sure that such diseases do not reoccur,’’ he said. At the sitting today, counsel to the former NSA, Ahmed Raji through a written note informed the court that he would be unable to make it to the session. Raji said he was attending to an election matter in a another court. But the judge over the case, Hussein Yusuf said that even with the presence of the defence counsel, the court can only proceed if the accused person is produced.
